Don’t Count Sheep

Attention, folks who love insomnia. Stop counting sheep when you cannot sleep. In foreign countries they count sheep because “sheep” sounds like “sleep”—this fits into the category of subliminal messages. However, the Chinese people can only feel more unsettled. We should count, Shuijiao [boiled dumpling], Shuijia0 [boiled dumpling], Shuijiao [boiled dumpling]…

[Note: 睡觉 (shuì jiào) “sleep” sounds like 水饺 (shuǐ jiǎo) “boiled dumpling“.

By “foreign countries”, the writer of the original Chinese text assumes English-speaking countries, which reflects the stereotypical idea the Chinese people have about the terms “foreign countries” and “foreigners”.]
