草泥马 [cǎo ní mǎ] n. Grass mud horse.  This slang term sounds similar to 操你妈 [cào nǐ mā] “fuck your mother.” Originally this slang term was a symbol of defiance against Internet censorship in China, but now it’s used as an euphemism for anything unfavorable. The “grass mud horse” mascot is considered adorable, however.
